13,14,15 SEPTEMBER 2023 Bombay Exhibition Center, NESCO, Mumbai
Though India is one of the biggest car consumer markets of the world, when it comes to car care, the country has a lot to catch up with. The tremendous response the Car Care Expo 2016 received, shows that the demand for professional car wash and maintenance is on the rise. This is in tune with the increasing number of motorized vehicles and the awareness for saving water and energy and of course time. The visitors to the expo include car wash/ service centre operators, petrol pump operators, suppliers, mall operators, and other car wash professionals.
The Expo saw the launch of some stunning new products. When it comes to car cleaning, high pressure cleaners take the lead. R+M Suttner, the 44 year old German brand launched ST-164 easy foam two chemical injector with bypass for the professional car wash in the Indian market. This device aims to cut back on water consumption and reduce chemical usage. Made out of a combination of stainless steel and special high performance plastics, all versions are suitable for addition in high pressure from approx. 80 bar up to max. 350 bar. Rinsing function up to 60lt/min can be done without any drop in pressure.
Manmachine Works has lined up two new products. Anil Sethi, MD-Manmachine Work Pvt Ltd said, “Our steam machine is a real contribution to the prime minister’s vision of Swachh Bharat because this is an innovation by which we can clean a car with just four-five liters of water without compromising on the quality of cleanliness. This is going to change the way we are washing our cars in India.” Speaking about the technology, B.P. Tyagi, GM, Manmachine Works Pvt Ltd: “The Steam Jet Car Wash & Wax Machine Model FX 1D, are innovative products that give both water jet spray and wax coating simultaneously to the car’s exterior. The Rotary Underbody Vehicle Wash system is designed to wash cars without using the car lift. This has a stainless steel frame and can be used under a standing car.”

There were a lot of good products on display at the Show. I found car-care expo quite innovative and very informative section. If we could have some cost effective versions, then they would be definitely do well in the Indian market.
I have been at the earlier edition of the Show too. This time, besides cleaning equipment and tools, I am happy to see such a large space being devoted to other sections like Car Care, Laundry and even for Waste recycling too. I congratulate the organizers of Clean India Expo for their untiring efforts to bring these issues to the forefront and provide a platform for the Indian cleaning industry.
It is a focused and niche show and we got to witness some of the innovative, best and latest technologies. The Expo is very helpful in terms of finding relevant agencies/companies who could provide cleaning equipment & tools especially for hospitality sector. We found Eurosteam’s products very useful and compatible for cleaning residential areas. It is a great Show to witness some of the latest technologies in cleaning industry.
The Expo has managed to draw the attention of each and everyone associated with the sector. The showcasing of different kinds of industrial sweeper was particularly interesting. Indeed an excellent effort.

I have been visiting Clean India Expo for the last two years, and have seen the show growing in stature, participation and even in the quality of visitors. It provides a seamless platform for all the major stakeholders of the cleaning industry – solution providers and end-users. Even the conferences/seminars have become an important and successful forum for exchange of information on the core issues.
The laundry care segment has some of the best and advanced systems and it was good to see innovative technologies showcased. We were also able to meet quite a few laundry system providers. In fact, the entire event was informative and more technology oriented which is a step in the right direction.
Cleaning Technology Expo is definitely an ideal platform to bring together the technology providers and different end users including the housekeeping and facility management companies. We are looking for original system/ product manufacturers who have the expertise, capabilities and experience in the specific field to cater to restaurant/catering services.
Setting up a commercial laundry is not just simply buying a washing machine. You need to buy a laundry equipment which is energy efficient, reduces manpower and is safe for operations. The technology is already evolved and available in the European and American markets. It is only a matter of adopting that technology and implementing them in India. At present, the market is little immature but is slated for exclusive growth in the near future. If you look at the market dynamics today, there is a lot of interest that is being generated from various quarters which were not even expected. Laundry Care Expo is just the beginning…
Be it an Audi or a Benz, it is overwhelming to have almost all leading brands rolling out classic models year after year in India. But these cars do require a professional touch for cleaning or maintenance. Manmachine Works offers professional car wash systems and solutions to garages. With a backing of over 27 years in the cleaning business, the trio – Managing Director Anil Sethi, Directors Karan Sethi and Kunal Sethi – has set out driving an unique car wash concept into the Indian auto market.
It is a common sight in most garages to be greeted with scttered hoses, puddles of water, oily floors, exhausted operators… But, in today’s race against time, a common car owner prefers a quick wash at a garage and frequents the more advanced service centres only at intervals. “In fact, every garage can offer professional car wash with our simple professional system,” asserts Anil Sethi.
The car wash solutions can be looked at in two ways – one by engaging professional solutions that ensure quick and quality results and two, by installing a car wash system to roll out speck-less cars in minutes.
“We began with selling machines but were not satisfied with what we were doing. At Manmachine Works we wanted to exceed expectations. Bring something new. We changed our thought line.
“Normally, car washing centers are seldom designed well, to the extent that when the dealership grows and the number of cars inflow goes up centres are unable to manage. This happens even in the best of the garages. Resultantly, the washing done on cars is just a wish-wash,” laments Anil.
Solution Driven
Now, as a solution provider well equipped with the right equipment and solution, Manmachine Works engages in designing and consultancy with its customers before offering the right product backed by accessories. “We don’t just sell high pressure cleaner, we offer car washing system that are equipped with accessories that increase the productivity and work under Indian conditions. Tested at our own company, Express Car Wash, the accessories reduce the time consumed for a car wash.”
Looking at it from the operator’s point of view, standing amidst hoses and vacuums lying on the ground, Manmachine Works offers car wash booms that can be attached to ceilings or walls; thus, providing a free ground area and a 360 degree easy access to accessories.
“We are the only company offering complete accessories and full connect system that are standardised for all the machines. In the sense, with the press of a button, I can wash the car, foam the car, put attachment of waxing the car, attachment to under body of the car and so on. This quick connect works to a big advantage with operators.”
Even the smallest of the accessories make a difference in the down time and quality of car wash. Take a spray bottle, when there is a tray to place it, it is convenient for the operator. Further, it is also about the look and feel of where and how the car is getting washed. “We are washing international cars in a very local way. We ought to wash international cars in an international way.”
“We want to have 200 plus outlets in the next 5 years with a target to have at least one car wash in every town and city. As our PM is going forward with Swachch Bharat Abhiyan, we also want to introduce clean car culture in every city of India.” – Karan Sethi
Constant Coaching
Educating a customer on the need of such systems is also important. “We also did a profitability study for a customer to show savings up to 75% in water consumption, 25 to 30% in electricity and reduction in labour by 50%. We also offered detergents and waxes that are eco-friendly. In fact, one of the tests at a workshop revealed a saving of Rs.2.96 lakh in a year with our products which was bought for Rs.1.35 lakh. Over and above, such products also help employee retention. In an industry where workers quit constantly, if operators are given good products that do not tire them or they do not get wet or fall sick during winters, their shoes are not wet… with good systems and chemicals they would prefer to stay and work.”
Understanding Products
Each of the accessories offered with the system provides a return on investment. “If we are offering a high pressure, we are giving it loaded with all the accessories so that they do not have to purchase them later separately. If it is a vacuum cleaner with double motor, we have two separate systems giving the option of switching to single motor at any time and saving electricity. There are special car vacuums which is a very handy tool by which the operator can clean the car very well. We have given it a red colour so that it is identified as an important tool. We are trying to include standard by colour coding products.”
While the systems and solutions are in place, it is also essential to sensitize the operators on the usage of products. “We have thus made programs to simplify applications. We educate operators on what products to use in case of 10 cars a day, 15-20 cars a day and 40 plus cars a day.”
Futuristic Approach
The environment is changing and we are also preparing for the future. Water is going to be an issue. In a definitive move, Pune Municipal Corporation has issued a notification recently that no water should be used for car washing as water tables are going down.
In fact, unauthorised centres and local car washers use around 200-300 litres per car, revealed Karan Sethi.
Looking into the future, we have introduced an amazing steam jet machine which uses only four to six litres of water to clean and polish a car in a single action. With the use of local mineral water which costs one rupee per litre, a single car wash and polishing will require water worth Rs.6. This will help avoid scale formation in the machine and sustain its life for a longer period. This is where the awareness comes in and we advise the customer to use mineral water. Right products need right supplies to provide right solutions/ output.
“We are launching the first car wash app to make car wash more convenient and enjoyable for the customers. This app will allow them to book their car wash using Paytm. They can also find the closest outlet near them. We are also planning radio adds to educate the masses about car wash.” – Kunal Sethi
Automatic Car washing
Car wash is an important market and Manmachine Works ventured into this segment four years back. After testing the market for a year, it went operational in the city and did a study on why a good car wash is required. “We can offer quality and quick service, good environment, safe place using good quality products… multiple solutions but our aim was to get a car washed in 20 minutes. We designed a programme for the operator to go through the entire process.
“We are also doing automatic car washing with a capacity of washing 200 cars a day. We have one installed at Hyderabad with a Maruti dealer who is washing 80 cars a day.” In two decades, India would be the largest automobile producer in the world. There will not be much space then to wash a car and we are offering a system that will use less than 100 litres of water to wash & deliver a car in less than 20 minutes.
“With Exppress Car Wash we make sure we do not use more than 60-80 litres per car which is around 70% reduction and now we have also introduced steam systems which only use 20-25 litres of water per car,” explains Karan. Owning a car wash and operating one is a massive task in India because of the laws. Car cleaning chemicals need to be environment friendly therefore the chemicals used in Exppress Car Wash are bio-degradable; all are ISO recognised. They are all imported from Europe and made with European standards.
Manmachine Works has also started a car wash college. “In the case of M&M, we are not only selling car wash solutions but also a car wash training programme. Our trainers go to the respective dealers and give a two-day training to the operators over and above the regular training that we offer to every customer.
“At Manmachine we believe in what we do and that is why we have started our own car wash outlets. Today, we have 10 such outlets operating in Delhi,” says Anil Sethi.
Industry estimates suggest that India will have the highest number of cars by 2050, its consumer market is expected to be the fifth largest in the world by 2025, and immense growth is also projected in the transportation sector. The car care and car wash industry will grow and offer numerous opportunities to prospective investors and franchisees. In 2025 every third car manufactured will be sold in India. Since the number of cars will increase, there will be a high demand for car washing business and detailing services too.
Business Potential
Hiring the services of cleaner boys for cleaning one vehicle in the morning is now giving way to more professional cleaning methods brought in by specialised car care service providers. The global market for car washing services is expected to reach to a figure of over $27.4 billion by the year 2017, driven by rising disposable incomes and jump in new car sales.
A car wash can be a good business for an entrepreneur with little previous business experience. According to the International Car Wash Association, 37% of car wash owners have owned their business for less than five years. There has been a drastic change in the automobile sector in the past few years, especially in the car washing segment. The figure of increasing number of professional car washing units speaks for itself.
Challenges
Currently, car service centres are facing many challenges in delivering the desired level of washing quality along with improving the productivity of the process and time consumption. The current manual car washing process is too much time consuming. There is always risk to vehicle during under chassis cleaning which involves lifting of car by a post lift.
Emerging Trends
Researchers have found that low and middle income households are making drastic changes in their daily routine due to busy lifestyle. More people are looking for a quick car wash solution at locations near to their residences, instead of the conventional manual wash.
One of the main challenges for today’s car wash owner isn’t just providing customers with clean cars; it’s providing customers with clean cars in the shortest time possible. In order to achieve the aspects of both productivity and quality automatic car wash system can be a saviour for the service centres.
Mechanized car cleaning system is already a $5.97 billion business in the US with more than 14,414 successful outlets, and in India it is just picking up.
Indian car owners today do not have many options for car cleaning and detailing, so they are bound to take their car to the road side garages for cleaning services. The car washing business has a handful of competitive advantages.
There is a need for professional car cleaning outlets which can provide an ultimate car cleaning experience. So demand for a professional and reliable cleaning brand is higher than ever and is going to increase further.
Concept
Automated car washing offers the speed and convenience increasingly demanded by Indian consumers who considers products and services that save time as important.
Advantages
In a fast paced society like today, everyone would like to get his/ her car cleaned in the shortest possible time by a professional car washer. Car care & car wash involve washing, drying, polishing, detailing and servicing. The process uses a number of techniques and ingredients starting from cleaning with mild jet-pressure, hot water or steam, foam detergents and liquid wax that will give a car that extra shine.
Present demand
Car ownership is a symbol of economic progress and is very high on consumer’s wish list. The rising middle class is posed as one of the potential customers for Indian auto industry in years to come. The Indian car market is massive, under serviced and unexplored.
As a nation we talk of a number scarcities. Surprisingly one scarce ‘product’ is time itself. Owning a car is one thing but finding time to clean and maintain that car is becoming a challenge to many office goers busy professionals. They in turn depend on professional cleaning companies that offer diverse services as per the requirements. Assuming every sixth car produced in the world will be sold in India, the automobile market will continue to expand presenting opportunities for the growth of car care business. Another factor is the growth of the luxury car market in India. Luxury car owners such as of BMW, Audi, Benz or Jaguar, don’t not want to risk on the standards of cleaning.
Is India ready for a professional car wash business ?
Car wash can be turned into a profitable business, provided proper research is carried out. The person wanting to establish a car wash centre needs to get first-hand experience on the technology and processes by visiting existing centres. There are different car wash business models available and it is important to single out a model that best suits one’s investment as well as the business plan. It is important to choose the right location for the facility, say an area where there is a high density of owners of premium segment cars or one with heavy traffic.
When it comes to RDI, location and infrastructure are very important. A couple of years back a normal washing procedure would have been acceptable, but today one is thinking of scaling up the business by bringing in newer technologies and methods. It is equally important to acquaint oneself with the newest technologies in order to keep ahead of others and keep the business going. Today banks offer loans to projects with viable business plan.
Though car wash job has not gained much prominence in smaller towns and cities, it is gradually evolving into a business in big cities and metros. Also, increased influx of costly cars in urban areas is opening up new avenues in this area. Availability of water can be a challenge, however, it is not long before this business becomes an organised one and starts enjoying similar status as that of any other organised business in the country.
Waterless-car-washThe waterless car wash is also becoming more popular day-by-day in India as people are becoming more concerned about water conservation, cost and quality.
Waterless car wash has been in existence in other parts of the world like Australia, Spain, France, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Romania, USA, and UAE (to name a few) for many years and has been a huge success. Municipalities in most of these countries have even banned car washing using water.

B P Tyagi G M – Sales & Marketing Manmachine Works
The Indian Expanding car care market is fragmented. There is not much awareness about the car detailing. The consumer behavior is also not very defined. “The consumers are unable to imagine the benefit car care can give to their cars. Some of the luxury brand owners are not paying much attention to car detailing while some of the entry level car owners spend huge amount on it. However, the retail sector in our Country is not fully developed. In China you have 14sqft of retail space per capita; in India it is only 2sqft. 65% of the country’s population is below 35 years of age. As the per capita income is going up, brand consciousness too is increasing. Hence putting global slowdown aside, there are ample of scope for growth in the long run Substantial business can be generated with right kind of market penetration.
3M Protection
We protect the car in various ways. We have products which protect the scratches. There are paint production films, which covers the various parts of the car. There is interior germ clean treatment. This keeps the germs away from AC duct and other interior parts. For the decorative space, wraps are available in 72 shapes… For under body also, bodysuits are available that prevent the car from erosion, insulates the under body coating.
3M Mobile Car Care
Recently, as part of pilot project, we launched two 3M Mobile Car Care vehicles one in Chennai and another in Bangalore. Depending on the response, we will start scaling up the project. It will be based on auto dealership franchise model.”
R&D
R&D is an inherent part of 3M products. The company invests millions of dollars behind the development of its products ensuring they are ecofriendly. We have an Innovation Lab in the Electronic City, Bangalore which is one of the biggest innovation centers in its segment. The germ clean product was developed after four years of R&D here and is a “Made in India; Made for India” product. It’s now a widely done treatment across India. This is how we differentiate our products from others. Environmentally, we have recently launched Dry Wash which is 80% biodegradable using only half a liter of water to clean a car. The product has been approved by Toyota too.

After our homes or offices, the next investment many of us make is on our cars. Yet, we fail to give due importance to car cleaning. The cars are either washed by the building security guards, drivers or by the domestic help. The service stations, petrol pumps and private garages offer car cleaning services as well, but these services are expensive and require one to drive-in their vehicle to the service station.
This encouraged Mumbai resident Raghav Gupta to start a professional door-to-door car wash and car-polishing company, Mr. Car Bath, in the year 2007 for residential and corporate owners. Currently, at Mr. Car Bath, there are two supervisors and 15 cleaning staff who offer 25 different treatments to the vehicles on demand. “Our specialised car cleaning treatments include odourless and non-toxic herbal pest control treatment; interior polishing; exterior enrichment for the swirl marks, hairline scratches, cement spots, paint spots, road grime marks and protective polymer coating treatment to avoid dullness and deterioration of the car from acid rain, dust-settle, water settle, UV rays of the sun & further oxidisation. In short, we offer one-stop solution for all vehicles.
We require just half metre of space around the car to provide the cleaning service to the clients. In addition, if the client requires a polishing work, we would need a plug point. Otherwise, most of our cleaning equipment are portable. We have vacuum cleaners and jet pressure machines which we use for cleaning the exterior of the vehicle, under the car chasse as well as for the tyres and mudguard area. We also have micro-fibre cloths and other specialised cloths that we source from different parts of the world.”
The range of cleaning agents used includes leather conditioners & moisturisers, fabric cleaners, general purpose cleaners, hard-surface cleaners, glass-cleaners, odour neutralisers, engine degreasers, engine laminators, tyre polishers, soaps and even special brushes. There are also upholstery brushes and mat brushes. Raghav adds, “The body of the car is metallic and nobody would wish to have scratches on the exterior of the car. To prevent scratches, we use non-abrasive brush called SHYNL (short nylon mesh), chamois sponges and chamois cloth of different grades like synthetic and leather to clean the exteriors. We also have slight abrasive brushes for the carpet to remove the rolled-up dirt.
“Some of our cleaning agents and equipment are indigenous and some are imported from Germany and the US. We use established brands from Haylide, JohnsonDiversey and Gala brush. Most of the cleaning agents are safe and pH neutral.”
Raghav made a lot of research before venturing into the car-cleaning business. He visited Dubai, Spain, Germany, New Zealand & the US; spent hours in the service stations and private garages to understand the concept. Besides providing services to cars, he also provides cleaning service to two-wheelers, trucks, yachts and private airplanes.
Another company of Raghav is Mr. Bath which merchandises car-cleaning products, car-care products and other innovative car accessories like car shampoos chamois cloth, non-abrasive Shnyl scrubs for the exterior of the cars and many more. Till date, Raghav have provided cleaning services to more than 2500 cars in Mumbai.
